Addison Career Day

August 31, 2018
Please have your child  come to school dressed as what they want to be when they grow up.  We have been learning about Labor Day and why we celebrate it so please help them think of an exciting career.  You do not have to purchase an outfit just come up with creative ideas using things you have at home that they can dress up with.  I can't wait to see them tomorrow!

August 24, 2018

Your child is officially a Kindergator!

Be sure to ask you student all about today's gator activities.  We have spent the first few weeks learning about rules and routines to help us know how to be a Kindergator.  This week we have been doing research on real alligators.  Let your child tell you all they have learned.  They are carrying home their gator boxes.  Please use these to put in all the books that your child brings home.  This way they can pull the books out and read to you.

This week's highlights on what we have been learning:
  • Reading - Students are practicing identifying the characters, setting, problem and solution in stories.
  • Writing - Learning how to use a graphic organizer to help us remember and write down our information.
  • Math - Rote counting, counting objects, recognizing numbers and practicing writing numerals.
  • S.S. - American Symbols - identifying, comparing and contrasting the American and State flags.
  • Science - Engineers and how they solve problems by asking questions and using math and science.
Upcoming Events:
    • Wednesday, August 29th - Early Release Day - School lets out at 12:15 p.m.
    • Thursday, August 30th - Chick Fil A Night
    • Friday , August 31st - Kindergarten Career Dress-up Day - Students get to come dressed as they favorite community worker or what they want to be when they grow up.
    • Friday, August 31st - Grandparents Breakfast

Homework has begun!

Your child should have brought their homework notebook home with them yesterday. It is due back this Friday but we recommend keeping it in their backpack to help ensure it doesn't get left somewhere on that day.

Each night your child should complete the review skill, choice 1 OR choice 2 and then do some reading with you. Reading aside, the work should take no longer than 20 minutes. The work should be completed on the pages behind the homework grid and you can put more than one night on a page to save paper. Until the children get more comfortable in their writing, they may need to dictate some of their ideas to you. But after a week or two, they need to begin doing some or more of the writing.

All the questions from the homework relate to our standards. For example, you will see a question about finding the numbers on the mailbox. This relates to our social studies standard of knowing their "place in space" from continent down to home address. The question about figuring out animals relates to our animal coverings and sorting standard. If you have a questions about anything we ask, please email me. And remember, you have a choice on which task you complete.

Have fun!

Addison is a Leader in Me school. This means we focus on the seven habits of highly successful children. We are very excited to help your children grow, lead and succeed! For more information about Leader in Me and the 7 Habits, visit http://www.theleaderinme.org/ -- It will be helpful if you use the language of the 7 Habits at home as well!  We are introducing each of the seven habits in August.  So far we have focused on Being Proactive and Beginning with the End in Mind.

Here is what our behavior chart looks like in class.  (This is an example - None of  our students are on the above chart.)

The students have made a list of rules for our class which are:
      1.  Hands and feet to yourself.
      2.  Mouth closed when someone else is talking.
      3.  Eyes looking at the teacher.
      4.  Hears listening.
      5.  Be nice to others.

Everyone starts out in the Dugout which means the students are ready to learn.

Out of the Park - Outstanding Choices
Home Run - Excellent Choices
Base Hit - Great Choices
Dugout - Ready to Learn
Strike One - Think About It
Strike Two - Make Better Choices
Strike Three - Parent Contact (This will be a note home telling what behaviors got them there)
