Weekly Update

Thank you all for the help you gave the kids on their Thanksgiving  Projects.  

They were wonderful!  The students shared their books with the class today.

Language Arts - We are working on blending sounds to make C-V-C words such as bug.  We are continuing to work on multiple meaning words.

Writing - We have been working on Narrative writing using the sequencing words first, next, then and last.  

Math:  We are working on comparing numbers and writing number sentences using the greater than, less than and equal signs.

Science:  We are finishing up with different types of motion.  Next week we will be learning about the differences in the day and night sky.

Social Studies - We are researching different customs and celebrations that occur around the winter months.

Please share the following information with your students and parents to get them ready and excited to write about their hero: (feel use as a blurb on your blogs) Honoring Our Heroes is a student writing program designed for you (student) to write about your real-life heroes and role models. The person you write about should display one or more of the following characteristics: generosity, trust, persistence, dedication, leadership, creativity, caring, bravery, imagination, service, gentleness, courage, or compassion. We want you to redefine media-hyped and cartoon heroes such as professional athletes, movie stars, and rock musicians and instead recognize someone who has made a more personal impact on your life such as a family member, doctor, public safety officer, soldier, or teacher.

Essay Rules and Guidelines 
1. The essay can be handwritten or typed. 
2. The essay must be on one single sheet of 8½ x 11-inch paper. (Single or double-sided but no more than one sheet of paper.) 
3. Completed entry form must be attached to essay. 
4. Student name ONLY should be placed in top right corner of the essay; NO other identifying information should be on the essay. 
5. A picture of the hero should be attached if possible. Label the picture on the back with the student’s name. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Thanksgiving Customs Project
One of our social studies standards asks the students to “describe the diversity of American culture by explaining the customs and celebrations of various families and communities.” In order to help students reach this standard we are asking each child to complete a “My Thanksgiving Customs” Project with their families.
For this project, your child will be asked to draw, take photographs or cut out pictures showing how your family celebrates Thanksgiving. Their completed project should have:
* A title and cover for the booklet.
* Two drawings or pictures of Thanksgiving foods they traditionally eat in the booklet.
* Two drawings or pictures of the people they spend the day with in the booklet
* Two drawings or pictures of customs/practices your family has for Thanksgiving Day in the booklet.
The students will present their story to the class and we will compare and contrast the different ways we celebrate the day.
These are the things we will be looking for when we grade this project:
* Completion
* That the work is done by the student with adult assistance only
* Neatness in both handwriting and coloring
* Creativity
* Thoughtful answers
* Students ability to explain their examples to the class

The project is due November 30th, the Friday after we return from Thanksgiving break, but your child may need to do some of the preparation work on Thanksgiving to figure out the content of the booklet. Please note that we have include a booklet for your child to work in attached to this letter. You may choose to use it or have your child create a booklet of their own or even a digital book of some kind.

Patti Agatston will be here again to share information on cyber bullying, phone and internet safety and tips for parents when it comes to staying vigilant with your kids and phones and the internet. She will be at Addison on two different dates and times so that more of our parents and staff can come. First, she will be here on Monday, November 12th at 8:15 AM, and then again on November 27th at 6:00 PM. These informational meetings are meant for adults only. She was here last year and our parents raved about it and the information they received was invaluable. Add this to your BLOG please and consider coming if you have children who already have cell phones or will in the near future!
